Flaky Water Heater Control - Fixed

[Update 7 Jul 2010: I've updated more information on this post based on a number of comments here. Please see the new blogpost on this issue here.]

Lately we've been having some problems with our water heater. Yes, barely 2 years since we moved into Viz. Our Paloma heater sometimes failed to deliver hot water. Instead, the water heater control (mounted on the wall, the digital display which controls your temperature.. ours is model MC-117) would sometimes flash or blink "76" followed by "0L". Switching it off and on would usually solve the problem but it's not nice when you're by yourself, trying to take a hot shower, and it cuts off in the middle and you have to rush out to reset the control. So if you get the symptoms of when using the hot shower, the Paloma MC-117 keeps blinking, and your hot shower cuts off in the middle and you get only cold water... keep on reading :P

The manual that came with the flat wasn't exactly useful. It did not indicate "76" as an exact error code or what could be wrong with it. I googled and found that there ARE people with this error code in other countries, and it has to do with a mainboard malfunction.

So called up Viz management, and upon asking them for the Paloma service centre, they IMMEDIATELY gave the number to me, like they have it on hand or on the wall or something. Makes me wonder just how many people have been calling up regarding this problem!

The number they provided was 68722043. An appointment was set up to have a technician come over to check what was wrong within 2 days.

Technician came and almost immediately headed for the heater box located on the wall outside the flat.. he had to jump over the ledge and perch himself near the condensor unit. Took off the metal cover protecting the heater box, removed what looks like a circuit board, replaced it, and within 15 minutes was done!

It really does look like this is a common malfunction problem for these Paloma heaters!

The service centre (Rheema) outsources to this technician's company, which is:

Poh Eng Soon
Blk 546 Serangoon North Ave 3
#08-220 Singapore 550546
H/P: 97548966
Email: rickypoh@singnet.com.sg

Work done indicates that the main control box was faulty. Repair was FOC which was good, even though the Viz management said that the Paloma heaters are no longer 'under warranty'.

So next time you get cold water when you are expecting hot, and get a flashing '76' and '0L', give Mr Poh a call and get your heater control fixed!

Makes me wonder how many other apartments have the same problem of hot water going off mid-shower!

I think OL and 76 are some cryptic error codes. Their manual's totally hopeless too. :(

Jeez!!!! You got your repair foc?? I was charged $80 for replacing a part when they came to repair mine, though my model is different from yours. I was told the fused had blown.

Hi ong_kianboon,

Are you staying at Viz as well? Mine was repaired FOC because the mainboard went wonky, and there's been other threads (outside of Spore) where this particular model had this recurrent problem.

Then again, maybe they wised up to it and are now using 'fuse blown' as an excuse not to offer FOC replacement?

Ya.... Staying in viz as well. We have different models. Mine does not have the led panel.

Is it cheaper to call Mr Poh?

Why some are charged $65, some $150?

I'm facing the "76" "OL" problem now.

I think, but can't confirm, that Mr Poh is the only authorised repairman for Paloma heaters? Maybe best thing to do is this:
1. Call up Mr Poh, check price to repair 76 OL error.
2. If price is not $65 as stated by Rheem Manufacturing (who is in charge of Paloma heaters in SG), ask him why, citing that Rheem is saying $65 only.
3. Contact Mr Eric Chew of Rheem, who wrote back to me with the $65 quote - 68721161. Find out if there is another repairman they have that will repair at the cost that he stated.

Thanks for your posts on the MC-117 Paloma water heater glitch. My turn for the '76' code factor - Viz Holland resident too. I will find out what my bill turns out to be in the next couple of days. To all who have posted their comments. Much appreciated.

Mr Poh fixed the code '76' fault with a new motherboard - The new board was FOC, the Labour/Service Charge was $65.

$65 is for weekday charge while $80 is for weekend charge. LO 76 or C4 76 is a communication signal faulty from control board to temperature control panal. If you have this problem, please contact Poh Eng Soon Servicing at 9754 8966 for replacing of the control box.

Thanks for the posting. I have the same problem. Mr Poh said it should have been fixed at OneLeicester but I guessed I am the unlucky one.

Just wondering, how long does it take for the water to get heated up?
I have to let the water run for at least 3 minutes before getting warm water and I think it's really a waste of water and money...

Thank you for your post...it was very useful. The manual is so stupid and the controller too...a horrible design from Japan...grrrhhh.

Will be contacting Mr.Poh for sure.

The water does take a while to heat up.. and yes, it's a waste of water :( 3 minutes sounds about right. Usually have to start it running first, brush teeth, gargle, drink coffee, watch tv, read War and Peace, and it's just about right when the water's nice and hot.

I encountered OL 76 problem with Paloma after 2 yrs of usage staying in 2 different condos. To me this brand is not really reliable.

I had the same problem with the Paloma water heater. Mr Poh came same day and replaced the circuit board. SGD80 for the board and SGD65 for the labour. Apparently this is a circuit board design fault.

Living in The Quartz, Seng Kang. Same problem with MC117, display change from 76 to C4. Called Rheem, they say FOC to change but transport and service $65.

Just wandering if they are aware of such problem, why are they selling this model. If they have sold already, than they should have recalled all and change FOC, it is their design fault. Don't understand why we are paying.
